This is how often you should see your doctor and dentist

While it is always a good idea to pay attention to what your body is telling you, and take medical care accordingly, many people are in doubt as to how often they should make an appointment to see their primary healthcare provider and their dentist.

Of course one should see your GP or dentist when there is reason to do so – when you have an illness or when you chip a tooth, for example – but there are varied opinions as to how often you should see them for a check-up.

This is how often most experts recommend you should do so.

Your general practitioner

How often you see your doctor depends on your age and on your general health and wellbeing. If you suffer from a chronic condition like diabetes, for example, you might be required to go for more regular check-ups, as recommended by your GP. In general, though, people who are under the age of 50 and are in good health can go for a check-up once every three years, and once every year after they’ve turned 50.

During a general check-up, your GP may do blood work, skin checks, mammograms, colonoscopies and other screenings, depending on their assessment of your health.

Your dentist

If you’ve heard that it is necessary to see your dentist once every six months, and shudder at the thought of how long ago you went to say “aah” in that strange-looking chair, you might be shocked to learn that every six months is indeed the frequency at which one is supposed to see the dentist for a check-up. This is because of how quickly dental problems can present, and due to the speed at which calculus (hardened plaque) can start causing issues with the gums.

When you visit your dentist, they will examine your mouth and teeth, clean the teeth, and tend to any cavities or other issues that may have arisen.
